Life transitions, grief and loss, anxiety, depression, pre and postnatal, parenting, and identity based needs due to race, ethnicity, culture or religion
Originally from Karachi, Pakistan, I have been a social worker for nearly twenty years. I lived for many years in Canada, where I completed my undergraduate and graduate degrees. Currently, I am a Teaching Fellow and a PhD Student in the School of Social Work at Sacred Heart University in Connecticut. Since 2010 I have been a trained yoga instructor, combining somatic practices with spiritual frameworks of mindfulness, meditation, and prayer. Body-based practices are an integral part of my personal life and a foundation for many of the therapeutic interventions I utilize in psychotherapy.
My approach is holistic, seeing every person in their environment, through the lens of hope and growth. I utilize psychotherapy, mindfulness, somatic movement and self-compassion to support people through grief, loss, and life transitions, guided by a decolonial and anti oppressive framework.
I work with clients experiencing interpersonal issues, anxiety, depression, life transitions, immigration, childhood trauma and identity-related issues. During our initial sessions, we focus on building a safe and trusting container through a warm and genuine relationship. This provides a relational context through which important discoveries are made and a journey to healing and hope begins.
My ideal client is willing to do the courageous work of self-exploration and come into direct contact with their compulsive, conditioned, and exiled parts. Clients are guided to become curious about their patterns, often an uncomfortable process as it requires accessing parts which are suppressed, justified, or avoided. The therapeutic relationship is a way to attune, build safety, and trust one’s true inner nature. This leads to self-awareness and increasing capacity to be with difficult emotions and states. Through observation and self- compassion natural states of healing arise and we learn to let go a need to “fix” ourselves.
I believe that each person has capacity, resources, and access to their inner wisdom. I witness people move through difficult experiences and adapt to new ways of being. I have had the privilege to see my clients let go of what does not serve them any longer, and grow and heal with courage. I believe in the power of community, relationships, and therapy.
